In my experience, the file manager built into Ableton does not work very well. Being a PC and Microsoft Windows person, the file management is backwards. The scroll bar is on the left side of the window … at first, it is not obvious how that you can scroll down. It is handy that there are several different views of files and instruments and effects but it is confusing how it is represented in the window.
In my experience, it is best to use iTunes for file management. It is fast to find music, you can drag and drop files, Ableton does not effect the normal use of iTunes, and iTunes gives you a file management structure. iTunes is no help with effects and other Ableton files but … at least the clips and sounds are well managed.
